Transitions DE Newsletter
Dear Transitions Delaware Family,
March: Between Seasons, Beyond Binaries
March can feel like the longest month—stuck between winter's cold and spring's promise. The days are brighter, but the air is still biting. We're tired of the gray, ready for warmth, waiting for the world to bloom again. But we're in this together, and that makes all the difference. Spring is coming. Warmth is coming. Brighter days are ahead.
And while we wait for the season to shift, let's remember something important: just like March doesn't fit neatly into one season, our community exists beautifully beyond binaries.
You don't owe anyone a specific way of being. You don't have to express your gender in ways that make others comfortable or check boxes that society created. Masculine, feminine, both, neither, something else entirely—however you show up in this world is exactly right. Your identity is yours to define, yours to express, yours to celebrate.
Some days you might feel more one way. Some days another. Some days you might not have the language for what you're feeling at all. That's okay. You're not required to stay in one place, to look a certain way, or to explain yourself to anyone. Gender is vast and beautiful and complex—just like you.
This month, as we move between seasons, let's honor the beauty of transition, of in-between spaces, of refusing to be confined. Let's celebrate every person who lives authentically outside the lines, who creates their own definitions, who reminds us that freedom looks like being exactly who you are.
Spring will get here. The warmth will come. And we'll be here together—holding space for every version of ourselves, supporting each other through every season, and reminding one another that we belong exactly as we are.
Stay strong. Stay true. We've got you.
With love and appreciation,
Rev. Karla

ALLY OF THE YEAR
BE_The_1 Partners have voted and are thrilled to announce the first inaugural "Ally of the Year"
Meet Ken Grant:
BE The 1 ALLY of the Year
Allyship is an action, not just a label. Today, the BE_The_1 coalition is incredibly proud to recognize local public relations professional and community advocate Ken Grant as our inaugural Ally of the Year!
When we launched the #Be_the_1 campaign a year ago, our goal was to transform allyship from intention into action. Ken embodies this mission daily. From his advocacy work across Delaware to his active support of local businesses and his dedication to creating safe, affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ youth, Ken consistently puts in the work.
Ken demonstrates genuine allyship by not just expressing support but actively listening and showing up. He is always building community and lifting up local businesses. He gets it and knows that being an ally means doing the ongoing work of self-education, acknowledging privilege, and showing up consistently even when it's uncomfortable or inconvenient!
Words from Ken: "I am deeply humbled to receive this inaugural recognition from the entire BE_The_1 coalition! To me, being an ally isn't just a label you wear; it's a daily commitment to listening, doing the work, and showing up for the LGBTQ+ community. When we make the effort to create safe, affirming spaces, we make all of Delaware stronger. Seriously, I am humbled and honored."
Stay tuned for the Award Presentation Video....
Thanks for all you do Ken!!

Pride flag raised again at Stonewall National Monument in NYC after removal by Trump administration
Leaders in New York City raised the pride flag once again at the Stonewall National Monument on Thursday after the Trump administration replaced it with an American flag this week.
Community members and advocates waited to capture the moment with eager eyes, yearning to see the moment. The flag that represents their pride was hoisted up again after being taken down.
"It's an act of performative intimidation. It's kind of like in you face, we're going to do what we want," said Mark Sydel, who attended the flag raising.
The flag was taken down under new guidance from the Trump administration, stating that only U.S. flags, or flags authorized by Congress, can fly at sites run by the National Park Service.
The Federal Government took a swipe at Mayor Zohran Mamdani and local officials who have condemned the removal of the pride flag, calling the re-raising of the flag a "political stunt" and a "distraction."
But the symbol of the gay rights movement at a place that is significant to the cause is a part of U.S. history, Tracey Sydel said.
"This is where the pride flag belongs. It's part of the history of Stonewall. And so to remove the flag from Stonewall is to question the history," she said.
On Thursday afternoon, the LGBTQ+ community and its allies took their power back by putting the pride flag back up the flagpole to fly side-by-side with the stars and stripes.
"This is our America too and by God that flag will go back up - for every flag you take down - 10 more will go up!" New York State Assemblyman Tony Simone said.
"The president should focus on real issues. Not B.S. and prejudice and bigotry and pettiness," said Janice Spector, another flag raising attendee.
The focus now -- to stand united in defiance.
"The flag is more than a piece of cloth. It's a symbol of how diverse we are, the colors stand for joy and harmony," Assemblyman Simone said. "They want to erase us. We're not going anywhere. We will grow in numbers. Get off your couches. We need to rise up in this nation ... this is our America too."
The Stonewall National Monument was designated a national monument by President Barack Obama in June 2016, becoming the first federal monument dedicated to LGBTQ+ rights.
It is located near the Stonewall Inn, a historic gay bar in the neighborhood that was a safe haven for many in the LGBTQ+ community in the 1960s. The bar was violently raided by the NYPD in 1969, leading to riots that became known as the Stonewall Uprising, which is credited with kickstarting the modern LGBTQ+ movement. The NYPD publicly apologized for the raid in 2019.

Transitions DE Newsletter 2026 Dear Transitions Delaware Family, January arrives like a blank page—crisp, clean, and full of possibility. As we step into 2026, we carry with us something invaluable: the strength we discovered throughout the challenges of 2025. Last year tested us in ways we didn't anticipate.
