Transitions Delaware Newsletter -August - Tending the embers - 11 min read

Transitions DE Newsletter

To our Transitions Delaware Family

Hello Beautiful People! πŸŒžπŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ

There's a particular kind of stillness that settles in by August. The urgency of summer has softened. The frantic planning of spring is behind us. And what's left is quieter β€” but no less important.

This is the season of tending.

Not building something new. Not chasing the next milestone. Just tending β€” to the relationships that have carried you through the year, to the parts of yourself that got a little worn down along the way, to the community that shows up for you even when you forget to ask.

At Transitions Delaware, August feels like this too. We're not launching anything flashy this month. We're checking in. We're making sure the people who found us in January are still supported in July. We're getting The Campfire ready to welcome new families. We're preparing quietly for Queering Recovery to open its doors in September. None of it is loud work. All of it matters.

Maybe that's true for you too right now. Maybe this month isn't about starting something big β€” it's about protecting what already matters. A friendship you've let go quiet. A boundary you set months ago that needs reinforcing. A version of yourself you've been slowly, patiently becoming.

Not every flame needs fanning to survive. Some just need shielding from the wind a little longer, tended with steady, unremarkable care, until they're strong enough to grow on their own.

So this August, we invite you to ask: what embers are you tending? What relationships, practices, or parts of yourself deserve a little quiet protection right now β€” not a dramatic reinvention, just steady care?

Whatever it is, we hope you know you don't have to tend it alone. That's what community is for.

Recovery isn't just about drugs and alcohol. It's about any behavior that is getting in the way of you living your best life.

Here are 5 things we don't talk about that lots of people are in recovery from:

  • Compulsive Behaviors β€” gambling, gaming, shopping
  • Tech Overuse β€” compulsive scrolling, validation-seeking, digital burnout
  • Food & Body Image Behaviors β€” disordered eating, compulsive exercise, binge eating/restricting
  • Relationship & Love Addiction β€” codependency, trauma bonds, people-pleasing, sex, love
  • Achievement & Productivity β€” work addiction, perfectionism, chronic busyness

Recovery isn't about what you are trying to stop. Recovery is about what you are trying to grow.

"JOY Snapshot"

Copenhagen has started a β€œhuman library” where you can check out people instead of books

Who said you could only borrow books from a library? Since 2020, a Human Library Reading Garden in Copenhagen has offered something rather different: the chance to borrow a person instead.

The concept was founded by Ronni Abergel, and describes itself as β€œa safe place to explore mankind, be courageous and ask questions that can help you challenge the stereotypes and better understand the diversity in our community”. Librarians facilitate and supervise every conversation, and all readers must agree to a set of rules before their first loan.

On arrival, borrowers choose from a list of topics. A librarian then makes the introduction, and they have 30 minutes to ask whatever they like – which we think is pretty cool!

Self-Care Spotlight:

Ask for help with one task instead of doing it all yourself

Independence is often praised, but it can quietly become isolation when we never let anyone in. This week, choose one task β€” big or small β€” and ask someone for help instead of powering through alone. It could be as small as asking a coworker to double-check something, or as big as asking a friend to sit with you through something hard. Notice the discomfort if it's there, and notice, too, that asking for help is often less about weakness and more about trust β€” trusting that you don't have to carry everything solo.

Transitions Delaware

We envision a future where quality mental health care is a fundamental right. Every LGBTQ+ person should feel seen, heard, and supported in their journey toward wellbeing. Mental health support should actively contribute to dismantling stigma and fostering societal acceptance.

Transitions DE Newsletter To our Transitions Delaware Family Hello Beautiful People! 🌞🏳️⚧️ Happy July, friends! Can we just take a second to soak in how good this summer feels? I've been sitting with so much gratitude lately β€” for this community, for the way you all show up for each other, every new face at Game Night, every quiet act of care that doesn't make it into a newsletter but absolutely makes a difference. You are the reason this all works. This month feels like the perfect time to...

Transitions DE Newsletter Dear Transitions Delaware Family, June has arrived β€” and with it, the color, the courage, and the community that make Pride month one of the most powerful times of the year. At Transitions Delaware, we don't just observe Pride. We live it β€” in every session, every intake call, every affirming space we create for the people who walk through our doors. But June gives us an opportunity to say it louder, celebrate it fuller, and recommit to the work that drives...

Transitions DE Newsletter Dear Transitions Delaware Family, Time to Bloom 🌸🏳️⚧️ May is for Amayzing β€” and that is exactly what you are. Spring has a way of reminding us that growth is not always loud. Sometimes it is quiet. Sometimes it happens underground, in the dark, where no one can see it β€” and then one day, almost without warning, something beautiful pushes through the surface and reaches toward the light. 🏳️⚧️ That is you. That is your story. For so many in the LGBTQ+ community, the...
